Simple Shift Dress

It's supposed to be simple.

But it's absolutely not simple. Sewing is tough!!

It took me a day to cut the pattern precisely. Another day to cut the fabric and prepare the bias tape.

While sewing, I had so much trouble sewing the bias tape on the collar. And I finally gave up on the armpits too. Decided to go with a simple hem stitch instead of using bias tape.

I added elastic band at the back of the dress instead of using darts (because I have not learnt how to draw or sew darts yet!) to give the dress a bit of shape.

All in all, I like the shape of the shift dress. Surprisingly, even without darts/elastic band, the dress looks like a good fit.

These photos were taken late in the night with my iphone. So please pardon the poor lighting! In case you are wondering, the dress is in a nice seafoam green colour!

Also, these were taken before I sewed the elastic band on.

I consider this a success for a beginner with zero sewing knowledge. Ha!

Thankfully, the fabric cost only S$5/mtr and I only used 1 metre!

I will probably try this pattern again until I master it.

Off to Spotlight for discounted fabric this weekend!
